Ajax sits between Pickering and Whitby on the north shore of Lake Ontario, named after the WWII Royal Navy cruiser HMS Ajax. We've serviced Ajax since 1993 — through its 1970s–80s build-out and the more recent northern expansion above Taunton Road. This page covers Ajax proper: lakefront from Pickering Beach east to Carruthers Creek, the central corridors along Harwood and Westney, and the north-end tracts up to Rossland and Audley.
What's typical in Ajax
Ajax is one of the most appliance-consistent cities in the GTA for us because the housing stock is narrower in age range than most of Durham. The core builds sit in a tight 1970s–1990s window — post-war expansion turned into suburban build-out, and the bulk of what we service today is second- or third-generation appliances in original kitchens. A typical Ajax service call is a 1990s or 2000s Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, or GE fridge, washer, or dryer in a two-storey single-family or link home.
- Pickering Beach and Lakeside — 1960s–70s lakefront builds, some with original kitchens renovated in the 2000s. Smaller lot sizes, galley kitchens, narrow fridge openings. We carry counter-depth pull-out tooling for this pocket.
- Applecroft, Rossland, Nottingham — 1980s subdivisions. Two-car garages, full-size kitchens, side-by-side fridges dominant, built-in dishwashers standard. This is where most of our Ajax dishwasher-not-draining calls come from.
- North Ajax (Audley, Rossland North, Carruthers Creek) — 2000s+ newer construction. Higher-end brands (LG, Samsung, Bosch) and French-door fridges with ice makers. Ice-maker water-line and inlet-valve calls are common here.
Water hardness runs 7–8 grains per gallon on Durham Region Water — Lake Ontario source, moderately hard, same profile as Toronto. Dishwasher spray-arm scale and ice-maker solenoid scale are the two chronic issues; annual descaling (citric acid or a branded cleaner) handles most of it. Rinse-aid discipline matters — a lot of Ajax dishwashers arrive for service with empty rinse-aid reservoirs and scale patterns that tell the story.
Cultural kitchen pattern: Ajax has significant South Asian, West Indian, Filipino, and Nigerian communities, and the kitchens we service often see high-heat high-volume cooking — deep-frying, heavy oil use, and long simmer cycles. That pattern accelerates two failure modes on electric ranges: element burn-through from sustained high heat, and control-board damage from splatter-heavy ventilation working hard. We carry replacement elements, infinite switches, and control boards for every major brand on every Ajax call.
Winter factor: like the rest of Durham, garage and basement fridge-freezers see seasonal compressor seizure when temperatures drop below 10 °C for extended runs. A ceramic heater or moving the unit to a conditioned space prevents it.
Ajax waterfront and Rotary Park corridor
The Ajax waterfront along Lake Ontario is one of the longest continuous shoreline trails in the GTA, and the homes backing onto it — Pickering Beach, the south end of Lakeside — see more salt-spray and wind-driven moisture than inland builds. We occasionally see accelerated corrosion on outdoor laundry vents and dryer-door seals in these homes. If the dryer is losing heat and the vent run passes through an exterior wall that faces the lake, check for corrosion on the vent cap before replacing the heating element.
